The Voyage

On January 24, 2006, a crew of four set out on an Avalon Excalibur from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Bimini Island, in the Bahamas.

The entire trip to Bimini Island and back took the crew about 12 hours–including some time to explore the island. See photos captured by photographer, John Linn. Plus, shots from the rest of the crew; Doug Haskell, Rich Currier, and Bruce England.

The Gulf Stream off Fort Lauderdale runs north at up to four knots — a crossing to Bimini means quartering a powerful current the entire way over and back.

Throughout the trip, the Avalon Excalibur proved to be reliable. The sturdy pontoon sailed through the Bermuda Triangle, and over the Continental Shelf at 33,000 feet deep!
